Our calligrapher

Our calligrapher: Sheila Samalin

Background:
A former elementary school teacher, Sheila Samalin switched gears 40 years ago and became a calligrapher. She studied with Ursula Suess, a European-trained lettering artist, as well as with Pat Blair, former White House chief calligrapher, and Sheila Waters, a world-renowned calligrapher, and other noted lettering artists.

Experience:
Sheila has taught calligraphy in Adult Ed programs, Rye Art Center, and was an adjunct instructor of Calligraphy and Design at Mercy College.  Her studio, Calligraphy Unlimited, serves not just the tri-state NY Metropolitan area but, thanks to a mobile phone and FedEx, the entire U.S. and worldwide.

Work Style:
Sheila’s meticulous attention to detail and original blending of traditional and modern lettering styles make her work stand out.  Sheila’s exquisite calligraphy has delighted her clients for many years.  With her expertise, she can bring your ideas to life and create truly unique pieces of art.

Recognition:
Her work has been published in national engagement calendars, and most recently in “100 New York Calligraphers”, edited by Cynthia Dantzic.

Sheila has exhibited widely in juried shows in New York City and Westchester, and is slated to be part of a Westchester exhibit in January, 2024 called “Working Hands”, created by Andrew Courtney, a photo-journalist.
